Daniel Fashion – Lightroom Tutorial

June 17, 2010

This is pretty long-overdue, and I apologize. I wanted to show you guys how I got that cool effect on Daniel’s fashion shoot. Here’s my RAW, straight out of the camera photo brought in to lightroom.

As you can see, I specifically lit the scene with this post-processing technique in mind. If you take any old-photo and go through these steps you’ll get something stylistically the same, but it won’t have the same impact as something designed to be made this way. I did this by split-lighting my subject with hard lights that had no modifiers to soften the light. In this case two speedlight flashes at 3 and 9 o’clock to my subject.

La Bohème

La Bohème

For weeks I’d been planning a very special shoot. It’s the start of a new project that I’m just in the process of getting the ball rolling on, and I was SUPER excited about it. I had the model booked, I had rented an outfit, I’d begged, borrowed, and bought props for it, I was ready to roll. Then my model got sick. Sad story :(

But the moral of the story is just because all your carefully laid plans get completely rearranged at the 11th hour, doesn’t mean you can’t still got a cool shot.

How To Be A Model

November 15, 2009

I’ve been a huge fan of Aaron Nace and Rosie Hardy’s work on Flickr for a while now, but I’ve only recently discovered their fantastic blog, ARF.

There are a number of fantastic behind-the-scene videos, and one or two good tutorials on the site as well. This one cracked me up. Great job, guys!

Gothic Ballerina

Gothic Ballerina

I recently discovered that a friend of mine is also a trained ballerina! Well… I couldn’t let that pass like that, so I scheduled a goth ballerina shoot with her as part of my “Portrait A Week” project. I had also scheduled a MUA (Make-Up Artist) to come and help out with some killer make-up but sadly, she couldn’t make it. Rather than reschedule the shoot, I decided to go ahead and help out the make-up in post-production. It’s good to have a back-up plan, just in case, and I thought I’d share with you all how you can add make-up to a model in post-production!
