Something Classic

April 25, 2010

I’ve been away a while and I’ve been trying to learn some new things, soaking up a lot of information via podcasts and website, but not doing a lot of shooting; something that is about to change.

One of the tricks I’ve been trying to learn is using feathering with my lighting. Feathering is where, instead of setting up your light so that it points directly at your subject, you instead angle the light away from your subject so that only the edge of the beam hits your subject. My first attempt at this with any sort of success was this self-portrait:

The Waiting

The Waiting

I finally got a chance to do pregnancy photos with my friend Lisa. I’ve got to say, photographing pregnant women is rather counter-intuitive. I mean… your’re photographing a woman and you want to emphasize the stomache?

Lisa had this absolutely fantastic gynormous 5-foot reflective umbrella that made some gorgeous light. Basically it creates a 5-foot light-source near your subject which creates just lusciously soft wrap-around light. Groovy! She better watch that thing… it might some day grow legs and follow me home :)

Lighting notes:
AB800 through orgasmic-umbrella at about 7 o’clock. Vivitar 283 bare at 10 o’clock as a kicker.

After the jump I’ve got a quick tutorial for getting rid of hot-spots.

Gothic Ballerina

Gothic Ballerina

I recently discovered that a friend of mine is also a trained ballerina! Well… I couldn’t let that pass like that, so I scheduled a goth ballerina shoot with her as part of my “Portrait A Week” project. I had also scheduled a MUA (Make-Up Artist) to come and help out with some killer make-up but sadly, she couldn’t make it. Rather than reschedule the shoot, I decided to go ahead and help out the make-up in post-production. It’s good to have a back-up plan, just in case, and I thought I’d share with you all how you can add make-up to a model in post-production!

The Beginning Of The End

Fight Club Post-Processing Tutorial

May 9, 2009

Fight Club!!!

I’ve had several people ask me about my post-processing technique on this photo, so here it goes. I knew that I wanted a high-contrast image with a really cold and gritty feel to it. This image really started with the prep. I found the right models, clothing, and makeup, and then lit the scene to get the most from my image. To get maximum “muscle” power, I used a hard spot-light with a snooted flash camera right, and for fill, a flash high and through a white-umbrella. I also realized today that I’d accidentally left the white balance on Tungsten, which is why it’s got that blue-ish cast to the original image… always remember to check all your settings before a shoot kids! But once I got my image, how did I get to here?

Marriage Is Beautiful At Any Age

Marriage Is Beautiful At Any Age

A friend of mine at work has a sister-in-law who’s getting married, and are considering having me shoot it. I showed them some of my portfolio people shots I took and they really liked them, but asked to see some wedding photos I’ve taken, so I started pouring through the 2 weddings I’ve shot to pull out some shots, and came across this photo and decided to completely reprocess it. It’s from my mother-in-law’s wedding to my step-father-in-law (and that’s a lot of hyphens!). Here’s a quick write-up on my post-processing step-by-step.
