Recording Studio Shoot with Friends Like Enemies

January 11, 2012

Friends Like Enemies - Ian Graham

Last week I went down to Dynasty Studios in the Pike Place Market area of Seattle to shoot Friends Like Enemies as they record their first EP!

This was the first time I ever seen, let alone shot, a band recording an album. Music has always been a big part of my life, so this was a real treat for me, and I had a blast doing it! It was really neat to actually watch and see how a record is put together.

And it’s an immutable law that all photographers dislike people taking their photos, but I had to take at least one shot of Christina who was also shooting that night!

One World Roller Derby – First Scrimmage

One World Derby - First Scrimmage

My wife, Sarah, just joined a brand new roller derby league in the Seattle area, One World Roller Derby and they had their first scrimmage match a few weeks ago. I brought along my camera and decided to try my hand at something new; sports photography. It was so much fun to shoot, and the ladies did a fantastic job as for many this was their first scrimmage match. The two teams walked away hugging each other and having a blast, which is really what it’s all about.

I’ve got to say that that experience gave me a lot of respect for sports shooters. You’ve really got to know the sport, know where to be, and have pretty sweet gear in order to get premium shots. I was pushing my gear as far as it would go, and I’m only mildly pleased with the results. This is one of those times when the gear really does make a difference.

Mostly where I ran into the limits of my gear is the the low-light performance. My 3-year old camera tops out completely at ISO 1600, and it’s a very noisy 1600. This basically means that I couldn’t get my shutter speed over 1/160th of a second, and for fast-moving subjects, like women on roller-skates, you’re going to get some motion blur. Also, the low-light auto-focus of that camera is not spectacular, and the body did not have a continuous auto-focus mode where the camera tracks the subject as it moves. Thankfully I’ve since upgraded my camera to the new Pentax K-5, which means much better low-light performance for both the auto-focus and also means I can get a better aperture and shutter speed to stop the action with less noise.

I can’t wait to shoot their first bout at the end of January. January 29th to be specific at the Skate King in Bellevue. Grab your tickets here!

Tattoos: Mike

December 9, 2011

I’ve been asked to take some portfolio photos for a local tattoo artist, Jibo Barrow of my favorite tattoo shop, Diamond Tattoo in Renton. This is Mike who’s got a fantastic chest tattoo. The swallows up near his clavicle are new and still healing but you’d never tell as it’s healing so beautifully. Totally jealous! I’m plotting some more ink myself, but it’s going to have to wait till the new year, methinks!

If you’re wanting some ink done I highly recommend the folks down at Diamond. They’re all-round awesome people. I’ve got several pieces by Majenta, but absolutely every one of their artists is phenomenal. Tell them I sent ya!

Street Fashion Shoot Preview: Katya

December 1, 2011

Katya's Seattle Street Fashion Editorial

My friend Katya wanted to do a shoot, so we recently got together up on Capital Hill and did a very simple fashion shoot just out on the street, almost all natural light (I think I might have used a bit of fill flash at the very end).

Also, we couldn’t help but yell “Baby Tigers!” after seeing that graffiti :)

Leighs Faerie Fashion - Purses & Shoes

A little while ago I did a shoot with my good friend Leigh who wanted to do a shoot together. We roped in our mutual friend, Priya (who with her sister were my Water Bearers) who did a fantastic job on the outfit as well as the hair and makeup styling.

We wanted to tell the story of a wood nymph who is obsessed with fashion, who sneaks out and steals purses, boots, and shoes for her collection.

More photos under the cut.

Portrait of the Artist: Joe Garber

Portrait of the Artists Joe Garber

I met Joe Garber after seeing his artwork series titled “Demons” at the Cupcake Royale up on Capital Hill. I was immediately captivated by the animal beheaded characters, and immediately knew I wanted to do a portrait of him for my project because I was simply inspired by his imagery. He was interested in participating in my project and we were able to arrange a shoot about a week and a half ago. I also knew that I had to do a funky portrait which would compliment his own work.

After a quick session in his studio we went out to Freeway Park at the Seattle Convention Center around the corner and use some of the great textures out there despite the pitch-black.

Model Portfolios: Charlee Noble Crook

Charlee Noble Crook Model Portfolio Book - Plain White Tee

A few weeks ago I put together a shoot for up-and-coming model Charlee Noble Crook, who wants to get into fashion modeling. We talked a bit about what she wanted to get out of modeling and came up with a plan to shoot 3 scenarios. She has been in touch with a modeling agency who said that primarily what they wanted to see from her starting off was the standard white t-shirt and jeans look with clean and simple make-up. This is very standard for modeling agencies. It gives them an idea of what the model looks like without fancy makeup or clothes that are designed to distract you. So that was the first look we went for, mixing it up a bit with a grey t-shirt to add some variety.

Charlee's Modeling Portfolio Sneak Peek

I’m afraid I don’t have a Trendy Thursday post for you today. I’ve been a busy little bee working on these photos I took last week with the fabulous Charlee, a lovely girl looking to build her modeling portfolio. Look out for her, cause she’s definitely going places!

I’ll have much more for you soon, and next week I should have a proper Trendy Thursday post for ya!

Death And Bunnies: Post-processing Tutorial

July 26, 2011

Mila Dean - Death And Bunnies

Two week ago I finally was able to do this shoot with my friend Mila and makeup artist, the amazing Jenn Hill. I had been planning this for a while, ever since I saw Mila’s vintage rabbit-fur coat. We have 2 bunnies at home; Ferris (shown here) and Cameron (badum-dum-tish) so I thought it would be a great visual to combine this amazing goth-chick in a vintage rabbit-fur coat cuddling a rabbit. I really dig the ambiguity of this story. Is she collecting the rabbits a la Cruela Deville? Is she a sort of Rabbit Protector Spirit? The Dia De Los Muertos makeup came very much later in my planning, but as soon as the idea flashed into my mind I immediately knew that it fit and that I couldn’t possibly do this shoot without it. I had been introduced to Jenn Hill via a mutual friend and I’d been wanting to work with her for months. I knew immediately that she was the perfect makeup artist for this shoot.

I’ve shown this photo around and tend to get a lot of questions about both the lighting as well as the post-processing for this shoot, so I figured I’d cover both of those here.

Fur In Fashion

Becky Franklin - Fur In Fashion

Last weekend I had scheduled another photo shoot with the wonderful Becky Franklin. We had originally planned to shoot on-location on the streets of Seattle. Unforgivably, however, we forgot that this is Seattle and it’s got a rep to protect, so of course it was pouring down rain. We had the incredible Maddie Hibbert helping out with styling. For me this is photo-shoot gold. Both of these girls are pretty brilliant, fun, vibrant and know how to bring out some of my favorite work. I just think our styles mesh incredibly well and I love working with both of them, so having us all on one shoot was amazing. The quote of the day for this show was “They’re like wings… on her eyes.”
