I also did some traditional fashion photos with McKenzie. I’m ecstatic with how these came out. McKenzie’s skin just GLOWS when you put light on it, and she’s an amazing model. Seriously, she just makes photographs look pretty. Getting nice photos of her is just too frickin’ easy!

Channeling Waits [or light testing my new 64" PLM Umbrella]
December 15, 2010
I just got the 64″ Silver PLM Umbrella with the white diffusion panel from the fine folks over at Paul C. Buff Inc today. It had been on back-order for about 3 and a half months and it finally came today and had to do some testing with it and channel my inner Tom Waits.
See some test shots and comparisons to a regular 64″ reflective umbrella under the cut.

Daniel
June 5, 2010
Last weekend I went out to do a fashion shoot with Daniel (aka Midas iWrite) (MM#1564051). We had a great time. I wanted to get a very masculine, harsh look to the series, and I think we achieved that very well.

C’mon Down!
June 4, 2010
I’m a big fan of Zack Arias, and if you’re interested in learning lighting, there’s few guys better suited to teaching great, simple lighting techniques than Zack. And best of all, he’s doing a FREE lighting class next weekend over at CreativeLive. It’s available free if you sign up to watch it live, or you can pre-order a downloadable copy for $79. A steal!
Enjoy!
Cabbage Leaf
May 17, 2010
We have a guinea pigs and two bunnies at home, and I wanted to start playing with lighting and composition of food to make it almost abstract. This first one was ripped off inspired from Edward Weston’s Cabbage Leaf photo.
It’s a very simple setup. I through a black coat on a chair and position a Vivitar 283 with a LumiQuest 3 softbox attached at about 10 o’clock. This created a very heavy shadow on the lower-right side of the leaf so I simply placed a white reflector just outside the frame to camera-right to bounce a little bit of light back into the frame.
I did try to do some infrared photos of it with my R72 filter, but I just couldn’t get the shot without cranking up the ISO to ridiculous levels and/or super long exposures which resulted in a lot of digital noise that ruined it for me.
So what’s next for this project? Well, ’tis the season for farmer’s markets and the bounty of natural food, so I’m looking to get some nice textures to play with.
SMUG Meetup
May 11, 2010
Last night I went to the SMUG Meetup group that met at a local fashion studio, SPA Studio in Mukilteo. There were no models, it was just about 40 photographers or so. They had 5 different lighting setups that we could play around with and experiment with, so they divided us in to 5 groups and had us take turns modeling and shooting. It was a lot of fun to get out there and meet new people and play around with some very fun lighting equipment on a scale that I’ve never had the good fortune to experiment with!

Something Classic
April 25, 2010
I’ve been away a while and I’ve been trying to learn some new things, soaking up a lot of information via podcasts and website, but not doing a lot of shooting; something that is about to change.
One of the tricks I’ve been trying to learn is using feathering with my lighting. Feathering is where, instead of setting up your light so that it points directly at your subject, you instead angle the light away from your subject so that only the edge of the beam hits your subject. My first attempt at this with any sort of success was this self-portrait:
