To The Moon And The Stars

My friends Caine and Lisa were making themselves a baby! I’d taken photos of a pregnant Lisa a few weeks earlier, but she wanted to re-shoot when she was even more bowling-ball-shaped, so we rescheduled this shoot for 2 weeks before the due-date.

Well, the state of affairs for Lisa didn’t last long. Only two days after I took this photo, Xavier James Cunningham came into the world! I like this kid already. He waited for me to get this photo of him and his mum.

This was one of the more involved lighting shots I’ve done. In order to get the “cresent moon” look to the belly I positioned an AB800 bare at 10 o’clock to rim-light the belly. I flagged the AB800 using some cardboard to prevent the light spilling into the camera and a second cardboard flag to prevent the light spilling onto the background. Then I put a Vivitar 283 at 4 o’clock with a snoot aimed at the foil stars, and added a cardboard flag to that light to prevent the light spilling onto the other side of the belly.
