The Waiting

The Waiting

I finally got a chance to do pregnancy photos with my friend Lisa. I’ve got to say, photographing pregnant women is rather counter-intuitive. I mean… your’re photographing a woman and you want to emphasize the stomache?

Lisa had this absolutely fantastic gynormous 5-foot reflective umbrella that made some gorgeous light. Basically it creates a 5-foot light-source near your subject which creates just lusciously soft wrap-around light. Groovy! She better watch that thing… it might some day grow legs and follow me home :)

Lighting notes:
AB800 through orgasmic-umbrella at about 7 o’clock. Vivitar 283 bare at 10 o’clock as a kicker.

After the jump I’ve got a quick tutorial for getting rid of hot-spots.

La Bohème

La Bohème

For weeks I’d been planning a very special shoot. It’s the start of a new project that I’m just in the process of getting the ball rolling on, and I was SUPER excited about it. I had the model booked, I had rented an outfit, I’d begged, borrowed, and bought props for it, I was ready to roll. Then my model got sick. Sad story :(

But the moral of the story is just because all your carefully laid plans get completely rearranged at the 11th hour, doesn’t mean you can’t still got a cool shot.

How To Be A Model

November 15, 2009

I’ve been a huge fan of Aaron Nace and Rosie Hardy’s work on Flickr for a while now, but I’ve only recently discovered their fantastic blog, ARF.

There are a number of fantastic behind-the-scene videos, and one or two good tutorials on the site as well. This one cracked me up. Great job, guys!

Michael & Dodi

A Handsome Couple

Some friends of mine got married at the beginning of October and I couldn’t make it to the wedding. By way of a wedding present I wanted to do a photo shoot with them. Dodi is really into the local Seattle Steampunk scene and organized the Fashion Show at SteamCon, and has access to all sorts of excellent vintage clothing through the incredible Vintage Costumes on Roosevelt, where she works part-time on top of her other work.

And really… what the rest of this post needs is a little mood music

Gothic Ballerina

Gothic Ballerina

I recently discovered that a friend of mine is also a trained ballerina! Well… I couldn’t let that pass like that, so I scheduled a goth ballerina shoot with her as part of my “Portrait A Week” project. I had also scheduled a MUA (Make-Up Artist) to come and help out with some killer make-up but sadly, she couldn’t make it. Rather than reschedule the shoot, I decided to go ahead and help out the make-up in post-production. It’s good to have a back-up plan, just in case, and I thought I’d share with you all how you can add make-up to a model in post-production!
